Harnessing innovation for stronger health systems
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way health data can be analysed, interpreted and applied. From forecasting disease outbreaks to identifying patterns in large datasets, AI has the potential to support faster, more accurate and more responsive decision-making across health systems.
EDAM is exploring how artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies can be applied responsibly and effectively to address priority health challenges in Ethiopia.
The Consortium recognises that technological innovation must be grounded in strong data systems, appropriate governance and local ownership. While AI offers significant opportunities, its effectiveness depends on the quality, availability and representativeness of the data on which it is built. Ensuring that systems are ethical, transparent and equitable remains central to EDAM's approach.
Through pilot projects, technical partnerships and capacity-strengthening initiatives, EDAM is helping to complement existing systems and strengthen national expertise in AI and advanced analytics. Early activities will include the development of practical use cases that demonstrate how these technologies can support policy and programme decision-making.
Potential applications include increasing productivity, automating workflows, forecasting service demand, improving resource allocation, identifying populations at risk, strengthening disease surveillance and supporting more efficient health system planning.
By fostering innovation while strengthening national capacity, EDAM aims to ensure that emerging technologies contribute meaningfully to better health outcomes and more resilient health systems.
