Gender equity and inclusion

Health data can only support effective decision-making when it reflects the experiences, needs and realities of all people. Yet important populations are often underrepresented in data collection, analysis and decision-making processes, limiting the ability of health systems to identify and address inequalities.

EDAM is committed to strengthening equitable and inclusive approaches to health data, analytics, modelling and artificial intelligence across Ethiopia. By promoting the generation and use of high-quality, representative evidence, EDAM aims to support more responsive policies, stronger programmes and better health outcomes for all.

Promoting equitable and gender-responsive evidence

Gender, geography, socioeconomic status and other factors can influence health risks, access to services and treatment outcomes. However, these differences are not always adequately captured within health information systems.

EDAM works with members to strengthen the collection, analysis and use of equity-focused and gender-responsive data. This includes supporting the routine use of sex-disaggregated data, incorporating equity considerations into analytical and modelling activities, and improving understanding of how different populations experience health challenges and health services. By making inequalities more visible, evidence can better inform policies and programmes that leave no one behind.

Strengthening equitable data systems

Equity depends not only on what data are collected, but also on how data are accessed, analysed and used. EDAM supports efforts to improve data quality, strengthen the availability of demographic and equity-related information, reduce gaps in data coverage, and expand access to analytical tools and expertise. These efforts help ensure that evidence reflects the diversity of Ethiopia's population and supports more inclusive decision-making at all levels of the health system.

Building an inclusive health data workforce

A sustainable health data ecosystem requires diverse perspectives and inclusive leadership. Women remain underrepresented in many technical fields, including data science, analytics, modelling and artificial intelligence.

Through partnerships with government, universities and research institutions, EDAM supports opportunities for training, mentorship, professional development and leadership. Particular emphasis is placed on increasing the participation and visibility of women across Ethiopia's health data community, helping to build a stronger and more diverse pipeline of future leaders.

Equity and inclusion are not standalone priorities. They are embedded across all areas of EDAM's work, ensuring that investments in data, analytics and innovation contribute to more equitable health outcomes for everyone.
